Actually I was one of the engineers. My hardware group had a good working relationship with the facilities group, and we had good opportunity to review the drawings and negotiate changes and added capacity before the new facility was completed. It was ready and good on Day 1. The new group of bitheads who moved in next to us six months later was asking for that new-fangled stuff call 'ethernet' to replace the other LAN, but hadn't thought about anything else. Been there done that too, in my next life, as one of those (i.e. contractor). Probably even at one of the same campuses! But contractors have only reactive contact with the facilities department, not proactive.
there's ways to secure it. easiest is to get a luggage lock with the right thickness to go into a hole that's in the release button.
