I dumped 2 more bottles of cataclean in. Gonna drive up to bmore and back to see if it'll go through the system. I drive 5 hours daily so I should go through the tank before the end of the week. My consumption is at 37 mpg right now. 17 avg.

I think I need to change the o2 sensor if I’m not getting a voltage reading.

I thought a jpg might be easier than a video.

Any suggestions on this other than changing the o2 sensor?

@mr_guy_mann I guess I give up and admit I need a new catalytic converter. I’m sure people have asked about this thousands of times on here. Do I get the after market heat exchanger with the cat? Heat exchanger same as resonator?

Do NOT buy that, it is not OEM.

    Try another bottle of Cataclean.

Once you see that it will clear the P0420 just keep using your car and test how long it takes to come back on if it does.

If it does come back just use your car up until you need a smog, then use another can a month before the test to pass it.

You will have your tags and be able to use your car until you source a real OEM cat.

Your other expensive option, which I went with is the Magnaflow cat 5681455 but they also sell out fast so the wait time for any of these two will be a long time.

    Cataclean works

Did my usual driving routine today (5 hours). the last of the cataclean mixed gas was used up prior to beginning.

Before I drove for 5 hours, I refueled with premium gas and cleared the check engine light with my scan tool. Also swapped out the gas cap since I keep getting an evap code.

The check engine light didn’t come on until I drove at highway speed for more than 3 minutes straight after driving city miles for 5 hours. Oddly enough, I got the P0401 code only. When I replaced the egr valve and cooler during the engine swap I never did the tsb software update! Didn’t know about it until I read more threads about the code.

Could this be the light at the end of the tunnel? Could my catalytic converter be okay? Hopefully I find out soon. Could it all be corrected with a simple software update!?

The dealer reset the egr system with the software update. Evap codes and p0401 are gone. P0420 came back without the check engine light on as “pending.”
Muffler shop quoted 600 for a replacement, sound reasonable?

What are they doing for $600? A new CAT? installed?

I’m assuming it’s removing and replacing with another used one. I don’t think it’s the magnaflow one @AzusaPrius mentioned. A new cat with a dealer discount in my area from Toyota is $1,200.

the threads on this subject are from three or four years ago so I don’t know what is the latest and greatest approach.

OK. That makes sense. As long as you pass smog with an OEM you should be good. It will probably boost your mpg making you op cost for work even better. Should pay for itself shortly.

I passed emissions inspection here last year before my head gasket blew so it won’t be up for re-inspection until December. Could I drive with the dirty catalytic converter without damaging the engine? Financially it would help to ignore it.
