But a breakthrough battery is announced every week.

I think I have used the phrase "wait till you can buy one" here before.

There is a reason why I'm shooting to get five more years from my 2019 Tesla Model 3. Repair costs for the ordinary car stuff is much cheaper than current car loan interest rates. With one exception:

Interesting. But who knows if the USA tariff war will allow those to ever reach American soil though.

I will get one when I can get a reliable one for $5,000 unless I can get cheaper insurance. Then it'll be more like a $7,500 budget. Otherwise I'm not getting one.

True that! I pay off early or purchase outright my cars and go to liability only.

Yes, but this is an actual production battery that is being unveiled by the largest battery company in the world.

    Hi Bob,

Have you ever been hit by an "at fault" driver and had to make a claim against his/her insurance?

Let me know, if you care to, and we can discuss.

Do not neglect the uninsured-motorist coverage, as hit-and-runs are standard operating procedure these days.

Moreover, if you take a loan, you are required to get the comprehensive and collision coverages. Why would anyone pay cash for a new car? It is a lot of money not to invest.

    In 2019:
    • Autopilot, $1.2 k, and later that year, Full Self Driving (FSD,) $6 k.
    • Passing on an unwanted Prius Prime
There were times when waiting for the next FSD, I wished I'd kept the stock instead of buying FSD. Today, FSD replacement cost is significant part of the residual value . . . even if not valued by Kelly Blue Book.

I'm in that state today. Repair of BMW door, $1,300. Insurance company gave me $267 + ($500 deductible.) So I changed insurance company for that and their inability to move my annual payment date to a better month.

They subsequently sold the difference to a law firm. I'm not sure I want to waste anymore time with it or them.

Again, what car can I buy that has these batteries?

I am happy this appears to have made it out of the lab. I am also looking forward to these being available in cars.

That said, solid state batteries are going to be available in 2020 (what??…oh).

Between promises of hydrogen cars, solid state battery cars, cars running on water, etc etc, I no longer get all that excited until it is available and tested.

This is more steady improvement vs breakthrough. It isn't new chemistry, just a new way of putting the battery together. It is a NiMH vs NiMH bipolar advancement. CATL has come up with a way of packing more LFP battery into the space for the battery pack from manufacturing and design improvements. Sounds like the improved charge speed comes from other metals mixed with the iron.

This is just more of the tweaking happening to the various Li-ion chemistries, cell packaging, and battery packaging that has been going on since the Volt came out.

PS: The ranges will be in the CLTP cycle, which I believe is more optimistic than the WLTP.

I still have fond memories of my 1966 VW MicroBus. But like hydrogen fuel cell cars and nuclear fusion power, VW is half way to an EV version . . . and always will be.

Why? Volkswagen is heavily invested in BEVs and wants to be 100%-BEV by next decade. In fact, every Porsche, which is made by Volkswagen, except 911 will be a BEV by 2030. They are also partnering with QuantumScape on lithium-metal ceramic-separator solid-state batteries.

Exactly. They are claiming 205 Wh/kg at battery-pack level, which is similar to NMC-cathode lithium-ion batteries if not better, despite being substantially lower than solid-state batteries, which are still several years away to make it to the market. 4C charging (60/4 = 15 minutes to 100%) rivals lithium-metal solid-state batteries. The cycle life was not mentioned, but it is usually excellent for LFP batteries. The cost will likely be lower than for NMC-cathode lithium-ion batteries. We should still take things with a grain of salt until we see them in BEVs, but this seems to be an actual product announcement rather than research progress.

Hrm, ID.Buzz is already on sale in Europe (and has been for some time), and they're taking orders in the US with deliveries scheduled for the fall.

Wanna bet that they'll fill those orders faster than Tesla and the roadster orders? Or how about cybertruck orders?

Seems vaporware can win 2023 car of the year.
