A reply to this specific point: in my case, I jacked up the car, removed the wheel, and was undoing the wiring for the speed sensor when I first saw the flood of new blue grease in places it shouldn't have been.

^ All of that ^ took less than 10 minutes.

Maybe just take it back to the place that did the bearing and ask them to spend 10 minutes looking?

 

I have an update and the problem has been solved.

Got the car back to the mechanic that installed the SKF wheel bearing and hub assembly in January.

They had a look and this new SKF brand wheel bearing and hub assembly (which includes the sensor) had already failed. The sensor was toast, AND the bearing was already starting to fail. This is after 4 months and maybe 3000 kms of driving.

So the entire bearing hub assembly was replaced under warranty. They did not charge me extra labour. All of the lights/warnings are now gone and all systems work as normal - the car is out of Limp Mode.

Lets hope that was just a one off and very defective part. But I do regret not going with OEM now. I am going to keep a close eye on this new part and if I hear any noise coming from it within a few months I will ask for my money back and replace it with a Toyota part.

The main reason I went with SKF was simply that it was going to take a few extra days to get the Toyota part shipped in. It was also slightly more expensive for the Toyota part. Lesson learned!

 

Yes this is the lesson I learned. I should have learned it a few years back when I went with an aftermarket 12v battery and that failed pre-maturely.

From now on for most applications I will only buy OEM Toyota parts.

 

You just can't with cheap parts anymore. I went through that will TRQ.
They are no longer of any quality. Mine lasted less than 3000 miles.
As did the 2 replacements.
I went with Timken for the rears, and Moog for the front. They've lasted over 100,000 miles...
