Cold starting

    Except for the fossil fuels burned to produce the electricity.

    sounds like a chance to calculate and compare two numbers.

    i wouldn't be surprised if threads exist on pc where that's already been done. block heater threads are common.

    Ask any mechanic, even an honest one, and he will err on the side of caution, saying you should use a block heater.
    He wouldn't want to be liable for engine damage from giving the wrong advice.

    When I had my Gen 2 Prius, and lived in Northern BC, I installed an 120 volt electric cabin heater and I ran that instead of the block heater. It was nice for me and the hybrid battery to have the interior prewarmed before driving.

    Like Paul, I had confidence that the ICE would start and run with its synthetic oil. Which it did down to -30C. That was long before 0W16 - I think it was speced for 5W30 at the time.
