M$ claims to make things easier for users with every new Windoze release, but really makes it more difficult. Especially for those of us who have been there from the beginning.

They have never taken DOS out of it. You can still shell out and run most, if not all your favorites.

For example, I would sincerely like to have told a customer who didn't know about how to install drivers into Windows Embedded System (cut down version used on horrible thin client boxes) to shell out and type fdisk c:\*.*

What sort of moron chats in to the mobile hotspot manufacturer with a f@rking M$ support question? I googled and found said ID10T a very helpful 3 part MSDN blog post on that very topic. I don't get paid enough to be doing that guy's job for him.

To do it right, M$ needs to rewrite that horrible, crufty old kludge from the beginning with clean code. It would be nice to have DOS alike commands for people like me, even better to get the bugs out.

Do you mean delete c:\*.*, format c:, or fdisk c: ? Any can delete files, to varying degrees.

Yes. I began with DOS 3 on an IBM clone and was at DOS 6 (or was it 7?) when I received a pirate copy of Win 2.
Programs were much more concisely written then, or they wouldn't run! Long live the command prompt!!!

I also found MS Works, circa 1994. Have all this stuff on the under table shelf of my pc station.

I used GEM before while on Technology 101 with Open University. Ever used it? Like a monochrome GUI.

All this nostalgia. I'm entering dream mode. Or was it really just another nightmare? (n)

    I meant fdisk.

An untrained junior person who apparently shouldn't be doing what he's doing is messing around with production systems. That bothers me.

Thin clients are these horrid boxes used to cut expenses by having centralized IT so you can run VMware (or some other virtualization platform) to download the desktop.

The box has Windows Embedded System on it, and the build can be customized. It doesn't have all the UPnP drivers built in.

In past lives, if I had been sent to a job, and been faced with a similar situation, I would have googled, just as I did for him.

Customer needs training before messing around with production systems. Hope he has a trained senior person who will be assisting him, if he screws up, he will have hell to pay.

Yep, I used Ventura Publisher for many years to put out a newsletter (in saddle-stitched pamphlet format) for many years. It worked very well, better than Windows.

Alas, I have some programs on floppy discs, also. But my current computer has no FD drive. It does however have a nifty drink holder and an old school cigarette lighter. I don't smoke, but you know, guests may have a use.

OK< I admit, this is not my computer, but it is driving me crazy, what is that thing next to the DVD/CD tray, it looks like the cigarette lighter from a 1968 NOVA.
