You need a new engine. Around here and in many places it might be purchased and installed for perhaps $4,500. Replacing the head gasket is high risk for repeat failure on an overheated and driven engine.

A lot depends on the condition of the car and the status of other high dollar items like the hybrid battery and the brake booster. If those two were replaced recently or you would like another three to five years without high interest car payments and the car is otherwise clean and functional, buying and installing a rebuilt engine is the way to go. A rebuilt engine also updates the pistons and rings, a Toyota acknowledged design flaw.

Thanks for the advice and info! The cheapest I can find around here is a used engine (50k) miles. Total with install would be 8k.

Hi mendel I have a 2013 prius 172,000 miles on it I have a rattle on cold start up and coolant loss no white smoke or cross contaminated oil. I can step on the acceleration when start to make the rattle go away. I'm not sure what the problem is. It just recently started doing this about 2 months ago. I just started working so I haven't been able to test much with what could be wrong. I've tried removing the o.ring to the radiator cap and it helped but with the o ring on the cap it was doing the rattle when I would come to stop signs and red lights after I took the o ring off it only does it upon cold start up. It's my only vehicle and until I get money rolling in there isn't much I can do. My hv battery has also went out where my car just constantly runs without going into ice mode. I have misfire in cylinder 1 and changed all spark plugs and cylinder 1 ignition coil. Still have misfire. I'm starting to believe it's a small head gasket leak. I just don't understand what else it could be.. any ideas?

Do you have a 2013 Prius OR a 2013 Prius c? Your profile says that you have a 2013 Prius c. These two cars have completely different engines.

I see that you created a new thread in the Prius c forum, and you say that you have a 2013 Prius c. https://priuschat.com/index.php?posts/3491624

I’m seeing “2014 Prius II”, just changed? If so, considering miles and symptoms, very likely the usual, head gasket leaking coolant into cylinder one. Moving coils around, versus replacing, to see if misfire code changes, is more prudent course. If the one you replaced is some sort of aftermarket, and you still have original, I’d put the original back in.

top two links in my signature relate to EGR cleaning. Bottom link is full engine section of Repair Manual. On a phone turn it landscape to see signatures.

    more head gasket info here:

do a full EGR clean as well.
