well to me, the higher ups know that GM is going down the tubes and are delaying the inevitable. investing in hybrids would cost money and make bankruptcy come that much sooner. (cracked logic i know...what they are doing is bailing water at the rate of 100 gpm on a 200 gpm leak instead of just patching the hole) eventually, the shareholders will know the true story and will be acting like rats on a sinking ship. but the people who run GM are in their 60's and really only have to hold the ship together for a few more years to retirement and its obvious by their current actions that that is all THEY are planning for.

I've wondered if the name "Prius" (loosely translated as "To come before") was not just about future technology, but also a message to the Big 3 that Toyota was able to come up with a production model before any of the Big 3 had any sort of prototype.

Oy.  No wonder they want to charge $8,000 more.  And of course GM is doing it without Toyota's previous R&D so of course it'll cost more.  And the only way they'll get around passenger car diesel bans in a few states is to sell trucks.  So some marketing genius must have thought we'll pay the extra $8K just to get our hands on a hybrid, especially if its a GM.
