My opinion of the looks may be influenced the goals of the Prius. The Prius is a purpose built car (kind of like a race car). It's basically designed by physics and I think that make it sorta cool looking.

That's a big reason I think Toyota deserves extra Kudos on the body design. What a tough task. With The Prius they had the iconic success of the Generation 2. So you have to maintain a connection with the previous generation. You also have the constraints of maintaining a class leading drag coefficent. All this limits what you can do with the body design. I give Toyota credit for doing a great job in changing the body style enough that it makes a significant difference and defines a generational connection, BUT simultaneously keeping the evolution of the Prius iconicly connected.

I liked the Generation 2, but I really like how the Generation 3 looks enough like a Prius to be a Prius but new enough to look modern and sporty.

My only knock on body design for BOTH 2nd and 3rd generation, is the rear visibility and the spoiler. You'd think they could improve that somehow. Poor rear visibility is one of the few knocks I have against The Prius as a whole.
