That part isn't wasted. It is the other part, going into spinning the engine at higher RPM than idle, that is wasted. As Jimbo indicated, this part could also have been put into the traction battery if you used the brake pedal judiciously instead of B. But injudicious use of the brake pedal can also cause similar waste by engaging the friction pads when not needed.
