<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(hycamguy07 @ Mar 29 2007, 07:11 PM) </div> I've seen a few people do that here- I didn't know there was a term for it. Thanks.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(livelychick @ Mar 29 2007, 06:44 AM) </div> Ok as I suspected there was a prior warning which probably contained a reprimand for language and socially degenerate comments far worse than simple calling someone a "doofus" which you promptly continued doing in an unacceptable manner, no surprise here, and instead of quoting all the verbal spew you dished out he choose “doofus†because it was short, sweet and to the point then booted you out the internet portal! So while you haven’t lied you haven’t told the whole truth, ala Michael Moore, another non-surprise. Truly weak because from personal experience I know that it takes a manly-man epithet to get kicked from PC something like RummyDumbScumOfABlowHole with smiley faces  your little girly-girl “doofus†just won’t cut it, these mods are made of much sterner stuff. Ask SSimon he’s used “doofus†in reference to someone and wasn’t kicked. Now come up with a better whine or lose what little respect I have left for your “doofus a$$â€. Wildkow p.s. BTW looked all over for that "doofus" post of yours and couldn't find it. You sure your talking about this board and these mods? <_<
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Wildkow @ Mar 29 2007, 11:39 PM) </div> MISTER Wildkow, you really should donate your Obnoxious Gland to science: first, it'll give science an example of such a grossly overdeveloped one they may be able to figure out how to cure the affliction generally; second, with it removed bodily from your person your posts might change in tone and no longer make anyone unfortunate enough to be snagged by one to feel as if you'd tripped them and shoved them into a pit filled with engine-driven rotating coils of rusted razor wire for no reason other than that your Obnoxious Gland made you do it. Or if not to science, at least give it back to Squid - he probably misses it. Mark Baird Alameda CA
Allow me to set the record straight on a few things. First, I hate the fact that as a Moderator I have no choice but to keep an eye on stupid little rants and banter such as this thread. Every day I feel a little more of my sense of decency die for having to read your s**t. Second, we've been over this. At least one person on this board is supposed to be intelligent, mature, and responsible. I find that harder and harder to believe with every new thread posted in FHOP. Third, I have banned/suspended people for verbal attacks. For weeks afterward I received a litany of PMs by that person and their friends telling me that it was inappropriate on my part, that their offense was trivial compared to what others had done, and that the Moderators of PriusChat are heavy-handed, biased, and down-right mean. Well let me explain to you in a way that you might understand. I feel like a rubber band sometimes. You can stretch me and stretch me. Some days I will stretch a little more, some days I just don't feel like stretching at all. But make no mistake, when I reach the extent of my stretching there will be a snap back and I can assure you that you will not enjoy it. I probably will not enjoy it any more than I will enjoy the litany of PMs I will receive about it. We try and we try to let people express their feelings and opinions. We want everyone to feel free to speak their minds. It's impossible to tell any more who called who what first. And there is no way on God's slightly-less-than-green Earth that I want to start manually moderating every thread, every post, every thought. I already have a full-time, 50-hours-a-week job and I don't need another. I know there are those who wish they had Moderator rights from time to time. It would not take long for you to change your mind. First you would rule with the iron fist and closed mind that you have and then you would be criticized. Finally you will come around and be a little more tolerant and you would be criticized. Eventually you will find the pearls of wisdom in the knowledge that when you're doing it right no one will realize that you're doing anything at all. If you think that the three points are referring to you directly, you're right.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Wildkow @ Mar 30 2007, 02:39 AM) </div> Apparently, you don't use the search engine very well. The thread is still there, even though it hasn't been accessed in a while. I used two words: idiot (and then came the warning to two of us posters), followed by doofus. Banned. There you go. The other poster, meanwhile, went on to disparage me in much worse ways on another, albeit simultaneous, thread. Not banned. And that's okay; it's very clearly up to the mods who they choose to ban and who they choose not to ban. That day, it was my turn. There was no whine in anything I've said here--just fact. You're the one who called me out. Seriously, what rock did you crawl out from under? And don't worry about respecting me...if you did, I would be worried about the person I'd become. And I don't access any other board. I don't have the time for it. I actually have a life, job, family, recreational activities, etc.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(TonyPSchaefer @ Mar 30 2007, 09:00 AM) </div> Well, I can say with no reservation that you and the other moderators are doing a hell of a job. Of course, I haven't been banned for anything (yet). So I'm a little biased.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(airportkid @ Mar 30 2007, 04:20 AM) </div> You're a hoot! <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(TonyPSchaefer @ Mar 30 2007, 10:00 AM) </div> <<sheepish>> I did send ONE PM...but just one. I had to wait a week, though, and it lost a lot of it's fervor in that seven days....
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(TonyPSchaefer @ Mar 30 2007, 10:00 AM) </div> Speaking from the otherside of the coin here and having been Guilty & suspended for making derogatory or unsavory remarks that could be construded as a possible personal attack. Getting suspended waiting a week and returning.... I believe in a two warning rule before getting Suspended or banned, as this gives the poster a chance to correct themselves or bury themselves deeper. Here you may get that warning or you may not. I have an unspoken (well not now) deep respect for the Mods here on PC, their job is kinda like law enforcement. most people dont want them around unless something bad happens. Like us its a thankless job, as we can make some happy some of the time but not everyone all the time. Hats off to the MODs..! Policing the threads and educating the posters one step at a time. Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what your gonna get.. B)
I have to agree with the hats off to the mods sentiment. You all do a great job and do mostly remain invisible while doing so. And Tony, your former signature line of "Nobody on their deathbed ever regretted not replying to flamebait" is something that still comes to mind and gives me the sense to hit the back button rather than Add Reply. Thanks.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(TonyPSchaefer @ Mar 30 2007, 07:00 AM) </div> Not me. Ever. Some time back, I participated for a while in an unmoderated board. The owner was so committed to an extreme version of free speech that posters could say and post absolutely anything they liked. People posted porn. The flame wars were vicious, though sometimes interesting for their creativity. At the time I joined that board, there were some very intelligent people, which made for interesting discussions. But posters come and posters go, and once the intelligent posters drifted away, the board just became dull. Throughout, you needed a very thick skin to participate. I also participated very briefly in a strongly-moderated board: Every post went by a moderator before appearing on the board. Words like "shucks" were prohibited on the grounds that they really meant something stronger. Opinions that disagreed with the owner's opinions were prohibited, and got people warnings and bannings. Prius Chat achieves a very good middle ground. While the mods may, on occasion, miss the mark by a millimeter or so, they manage to keep this a place where all opinions can be expressed, other than extreme personal attacks. If I were a mod, I'd probably prohibit anything derrogatory after "you." But I'm not, and I don't want to be, so I think the mods are doing a fine job. I've never been banned, but I refrain from calling names. Just doesn't serve any purpose.
considering the size of this board and the fact that we have a ton of posters with just 3 mods and 1 admin, i think they're doing great. sometimes they have to make a tough call, and people get upset. it's bound to happen in this type of community. never once have i coveted the job of the moderators.
I'm an admin on another board that gets about as much traffic as this one. A number of people here wouldn't last a week there without being banned. Result: there are just as many, if not more, political discussions, but they're all intelligent and (relatively) civil. And yes, both sides of each issue is heard from.
As anyone who has ever moderated an online forum can attest (I haven't done it on PriusChat and I have no desire to, but I have on other forums), it is a thankless job. As Tony says, either people think you're too heavy handed, or else they criticize you for not enforcing the rules enough. My impression of Tony, Evan and the other mods is that they are very reasonable and tolerant folks and do a fine job. And if you do get suspended for a week, what is the big freakin' deal! It could be a good thing- a chance to be more productive at work, or spend a little more time with your family. If a week off from PriusChat is that hard to live with, you might have an addiction problem! p.s. note to mod- is it OK to use the word "freakin' "? If not, please feel free to edit.
As the thread topic implies: "Fear Hate other People Forum" I personally do not feel its the Admin or the Mods fault the topics turn nasty, it's the posters that start or reply on the threads. When I first started on PC I posted an an uncoothed reply only to still have the same statement thrown in mine & the others faces to get the other posters against me darn "Thread Stalkers". I personally do not hold grudges, If some one pulls my chain and I snap back. Thats it.. It stays on that thread, I do not follow the person around trying to defame their character...... If a person disagrees with a topic & they feel compelled to reply and its done in a civil manner no harm no foul. But reply in a nasty way ie calling the OP names is going to send the thread down hill.. True? PS. I too have served as a Moderator on a large board, I did this for 3yrs. So I feel for these guys, and I again say they are doing a great job.. Elementry My Dear Watson B)
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(TonyPSchaefer @ Mar 30 2007, 10:00 AM) </div> Tonys got it. And Really he isn't lying about being a moderator. It is a thankless job. I run a very small board (50+ active accounts at any given time) and even there you can't keep EVERYONE happy all of the time, and if you try, you wind up in a worse position yourself. You let things go as far as they can possibly go while monitoring the situation the entire time (and sometimes that requires checking in at odd times if you have a small admin team) but when it reaches the edge, and someone get pushed over it... the instant admin/modertors take action they're going to be harrassed, harangued, and belittled. No the admin don't take sides, they have to wait it out and see whos the first to go "too far" in the heated argument, and when it happens they react. Politics/Religion are one of those touchy areas, where people really stand up for what they believe in. Post editting isn't taken lightly, and for the most part the mods here are good at keeping things well taken care of in a timely fashion. I for one like Prius Chat, and the rules that they have in place for moderation, it is a pretty laid back community with moderators who for the most part are mature and wise in what they choose to do.
