Toyota testing new solar powered Prius
"Considering that Toyota rates the pure electric range of a standard-issue Prius PHV at 68 km (42 miles), or 25 mile EPA, the bottom line of this experiment is that with those new solar cells, owners of a plug-in Prius would no longer have to plug in. I'm not sure covering the rear window with a solar panel is a good idea. I would like to see panels that slide down over the front and rear windows when you park. I was thinking about the next gen Prius recently as it seems the Prius redesign interval is every 6 years and punched in 2022 Prius on Google and this was first thing that popped up.. very excited to see what they’ll have by then as I should be shopping for a new car by then.

This article agrees with Emissions Analytics that hybrids are a better way to go than long range EVs. Batteries and the materials to make them are limited. From the climate change and overall sustainability points of view, Toyota is right to push mass-market hybrids instead of EVs.
