I'm not good a cross-word puzzles...I seem to have an issue with 'locking in' to one idea and not being able to get myself to think more abstractly. My first impressions are often accurate, but if I'm off base I just don't seem to be able to move on. That seems to be what I'm doing here....
So, the hint didn't help, you mean? You want me not to be cute with the clues? This is about a uranium mine, and is near the end of the line.

Weird. Say, where'd Wildkow go - I haven't seen him in Fred's for some time. The only "story" I can see at first glance is that the old airport got outgrown, and the terrain is lumpy enough it was cheaper to relocate a new airstrip a couple miles away rather than enlarge the existing strip. The lack of maintenance facilities at either strip indicates low traffic, so it wasn't traffic that outgrew the strip but size and type of aircraft: jets now serve where D-18s and DC-3s used to fly in the weekly groceries. The lack of roads leading out of the settlement but an expensive jet capable airport indicate a military outpost of some kind in some inhospitable area - perhaps a CIA rendition outpost where they can dump dead detainees off the edge of the earth without a public fuss. Clues would be nice. MB
"Jet-capable airport"? I don't think it's even paved. "Without a public fuss" is closer to the heart of the story, but may not help you find it. Think yellow, and go from there.

You're getting warmer.... "Think yellow, and go from there." There's also another animal on the yellow <strike>brick</strike> uranium road.
The Whitehorse reference was only to get you as far as Yellowknife, and can be ignored otherwise. "The end of the line" is a word play on the name of the place, and a cryptic reference to its fate, due to the effects of radiation. The story is not at all well known, which is part of my reason for posting this, and it leads all the way back to The Manhattan Project. The "other animal" is mentioned in the 'yellow brick road' movie, and is not a feline. It will give you a good idea of where to look.

Good one, mojo. Here's the story of Deline on the Great Bear Lake and its connection to the uranium used in The Manhattan Project. "A Village of Widows" at the bottom of the page is poignant.

Appears to not be high latitude. An old fort of some kind, but looks like new sand volleyball courts? There is no land mass immediately to the south (size of waves indicate a decent fetch), so I don't think it's a canal.
