How do the batteries get charged

    That's exactly what the car was doing, while providing the cabin with heat.

    I do enjoy driving my Prius. My anxiety was due to impresssion I had that a low battery bar was closer to 0% charge remaining. As jayman points, I should trust my Prius and associate low battery bar to around 40%. It's all a part of my transition from mph to mpg mode of thinking, I guess.
