What most folks don't realize is that WD40 pretty much sucks as a lubricant (surprise - it doesn't say "lubricant" anywhere on the can!) - much like kerosene. But it makes a great solvent - much like kerosene. I use it for cleaning all kinds of stuff - saw blades, bicycle parts, automotive parts, gunk off of painted surfaces. Works great for that! Just don't count on it to lubricate much for very long and you'll be very happy. :0

If I need my solvent pressurized, WD40 is the answer. If you want it in cheaper, larger quantity, just get a jug of kerosene.

Mr Sheen, works really well and leaves the car with a wax coating. I use Mr Sheen to clean my bikes, I only use water if the bike is really dirty, like after riding for 6 hours in the rain. Spray Mr Sheen on the tar, let it sit a minute then buff off, you might need to repeat if the tar is really heavy.

It was not developed to be a lubricant--from their site:

In 1953, a fledgling company called Rocket Chemical Company and its staff of three set out to create a line of rust-prevention solvents and degreasers for use in the aerospace industry, in a small lab in San Diego, California.

It took them 40 attempts to get the water displacing formula worked out. But they must have been really good, because the original secret formula for
WD-40®—which stands for Water Displacement perfected on the 40th try—is still in use today

    Not according to their site:
    What does WD-40 contain?

While the ingredients in WD-40 are secret, we can tell you what WD-40 does NOT contain. WD-40 does not contain silicone, kerosene, water, wax, graphite, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), or any known cancer-causing agents.

I don't know what WD 40 contains, but what I do know is that it does, indeed remove road tar. So does Kerosene. So does Bug and Tar remover. So do lots of things. Even engine oil will do it.

Haven't we killed this dead horse enough times?

All I can say is that if you were to look up the ingredients list of kerosene, that you also would not find kerosene on that list... Wait for it....

    Don't forget gasoline!

Oh hell no. Just getting rolling.

Yes, yes he does. Just pick up a tin at the supermarket in the cleaning products aisle and give him a lift home and he will stay with you to help you clean until he is exhausted.
