Weather has a random component and to some extent, a form of 'Russian Roulette'.

absolutely. evolution continues on, but weeding out the hopeless is a process for millennia.

Nails down is less stable, higher center of gravity, and leaves a bigger gap for wind to re-grab the item and tumble or flip it over again. Lather, rinse, repeat.

OTOH, i suppose that even if only half the boards are nails-up -- or even a much smaller fraction -- there is likely to be enough total debris to flatten many tires very quickly.

Flooding is still happening and no doubt Irma recovery will be very costly. A big year and there is good reason to watch for further storms.

Large-scale view of Irma hurricane-force winds reveals what this storm did not do. Areas of Florida that did not get as much wind do not have magical immunity. Only luck, which is not a business plan.

nope, but the lather, rinse, repeat cycle will never end. we're human.

Naples is a mess with both wind and flooding. Fighting urge to describe debris laden water as Naples syrup.

    Lost that fight...

With extensive power outages, folks in many parts of FL will see night sky without light pollution. Some may be honestly amazed.

Later power will be restored and back to 'reality'. So to speak.

Archaeology is pretty neat. Below example of event archaeology, where an item of interest surfaces:

Canoe unearthed by Hurricane Irma could be hundreds of years old - ABC News

It's a shorter-time analogy to Otzi the iceman, whose house icehouse melted out.

This canoe is now stored underwater to prevent fungal degradation. But Florida Division of Historical Resources needs an email from a wood-degradation specialist :) Water only works for that if it is anoxic.

Yes, but what motivates the comment? Wire nails (of round cross-section) started in the 1860s. All that stuff we read as kids about settlers burning their old houses to easily recover the nails - those were square.

Early native American and European trade included iron nails. I'm also remembering some of the decorative uses:

The canoe is an interesting artifact but the iron nails make is a little too recent. I'm more interest in the fasteners pre-iron age.

Canoe-wood age could be determined by Beta Analytic lab in Miami. They are pros

Radiocarbon Dating in Miami, AMS Lab - Beta Analytic

Doing such work for free is good advertising. So I'll send another email.

There are also 'dendro' people who could ID wood species used in this canoe. Not necessarily local.

If only our environmental catch pot here were a place where folks could get interested in details of how science informs understanding...
