If only there was an alternative vehicle type that didn't use flammable or combustible material to move a car forward...... If only......
Funny you should say that as I'm actually trying to get into good enough shape to be able to bike instead of drive to work.
It is because it is new is why people are riled up. Your stats are also reasons why Tesla fires shouldn't be major news. Making hydrogen cars and stations as safe and convenient as gasoline ones does cost a lot more.
Partially true (not sure about the cost thing long term), but BEV advocates are riled up because, just like the ethanol lobby wants to squelch alternate fuels such as methanol, BEV advocates see an urgent need to get America to pick BEV as the "winner" to get all of the support and all of the resources., tax monies etc.
Look at the state of hydrogen cars and plug ins in America right now. I think it is safe to say one is already the winner. It will take billions of tax dollars to give hydrogen just a chance at actually competing at this point. What does it offer that other renewable and alternative fuels can't? As for fuel station costs. Gasoline and diesel is held in compatible plastic or steel tanks, and is moved through pipes and hoses by pumps working under atmospheric pressure into vehicles. In comparison, the hydrogen tank will require more material to withstand the extreme pressures before even considering material compatibility. The compressor will require more maintenance and energy than the liquid fuel pump. Then a chilling system that takes temperatures way down below commercial food freezers is added. The hydrogen station will always cost more than one for liquid fuels. CNG ones also have higher costs, but work at pressures below half of what a hydrogen one does.
