Something to note with the Insight's lifetime MPG meter is that its possible to reset it. So someone could reset it at the top of a hill, coast down, take a picture of the 99.9MPG, and claim that that's what they average.
I never intended this to be a serious thread - can anyone see the obvious PhotoChop job I did on the dash? Please disregard the post after this one - nobody has gotten 99.2 mpg lifetime driving 100,000+ miles. Nobody. I know plenty of people that owned an Insight I. Troy Heagy is desperate to argue - facts won't get in his way. I intend to refurb my Insight with a battery pack 25% more powerful than the OEM....runs cooler - critical in Texas. Someone in California put a turbo and I have fleeting thoughts on that "second assist"....I think of EcoBoost as a more conventional way of doing Honda's IMA. The three reasons the original Insight is so fuel efficient is it's light, it's aerodynamic, and the lean burn gives the engine diesel efficiency when cruising at moderate speeds. Yes, I'm saying all of the above probably matter more than the hybrid system. The dash was very social engineered. Huge digital speedo shouts you are accelerating as opposed to a small dial sweep that understates it. And the long linear instant mpg, while it looks like MS DOS 6.2 vs the really sharp one on Ford that has a OS X 10.7 Mountain Lion look, is still laid out better for hypermiling.
Just this past weekend an Insighter bought a second model, drove it from Oregon to Ohio, and averaged over 90 mpg for the trip. The problem with your photoshop job is it is too believable..... many people have actually done it. If you had put 120 then your joke would have been funny.
