There you go...more proof in my belief that ordering whatever basil dishes in a Thai restaurant is the safest! There are some ginger dishes and the like that I like...but I would always side with basil vs any Pad Thai.
Peppers are more of a mouth/throat irritant, although I do usually have digestive issues with cayenne.
Historically, the Chinese used crap ("night soil") to fertilize their crops. You'd want to cook the greens, too.
I love Thai food. There is a Thai "fast food" place in Ann Arbor, MI called "No Thai!" and they have the best pad Thai. They have 5 different levels of spicyness and I cannot go beyond #4. For $8 I can eat it for two meals. However, I have also had Thai food from other places that I didn't like. So, depends on the restaurant I guess.
You talked about peanut flavors. I find that any Thai that's heavy on peanut flavors is YUCK. Stay away from the "nutty stuff" and you might find you like it a bit better.
Found a new Thai place in Olympia on Saturday... Pad Thai Express. Really good food, and they have brown rice! Yay!
Polit, the "recycling" procedure you mention has not ended here in CH. All the edible plants I buy get a warm soapy water wash on their way in the door. Cooking is good, as far as it goes, but cooked poo is just not all that more appetizing than crudite. OK, enough - back to Thai chai discussions!
