Is pressed wood environmentally better, worse, or neutral compared to regular wood?

Hanging the TV in the alcove prevents people from watching it from the sides. The alcove which is 2 feet deep and 4 ft wide by 9 feet high, has a lot of unused space. Putting a bookcase/entertainment system there makes the space more useful.

We have a lot of nice furniture pieces(bought and donated to us) Just expensive wood holding crap. If you can say we're "enjoying" it, then we're having a blast. We once bought a $1500 custom made cherry wood bed(at my wife's insistence). Used it for 10 years(I break it down to 150/year, 12 bucks/mo, 40 cents/day). Not the most expensive thing in the world. Needless to say, we gave it away, fearing that it'd be a hazard to our kids(imagine that, it just doesn't cause cancer).

Even if buying MDF/particle board, it's a good idea to get used stuff, as most of the formaldehyde offgassing occurs when it's newer, so the older it is, the less toxic it is. Plus then you get to use one of the three Rs - re-use. :)
