This may seem silly, but be sure you actually have locked the car, preferably with the black button. If it's not locked, SKS won't respond to open the door for you, nor will it light the dome light when you approach. Then again, you said you had problems even starting the car. Doesn't matter if door is locked or unlocked for that.

I was having a similar problem (it wouldn't open the doors but it would start the car without using the key) and I took it to the dealer about 2 months ago, whatever he did fixed the problem. Now I'm having the problem again. Neilther of my remotes work to open the car doors and many times, when I go to start the vehlcle, it won't start (I get the "key" symbol). It seems if I press the park button & then try the power button again, it will start. I checked the button under the steering wheel and it is out. My remote doesn't light when I press it. Does anyone know what this problem is caused by? I have a 2007 Prius with 80,000 miles on the clock. Appreciate any help.
If the light on the remote fob doesn't light, replace the battery in the remote. There are instructions around here for opening the remote.
