You could always just weigh it.

I like my oil like I like my....

Cheap and simple. Order from Costco. Comes to the door. Pour 5 quarts in the Subaru -- done.

I ain't a gonna to weigh no stinkin' oil.

LOL. But seriously. When I was a kid, all the fathers made the kids change the oil. Sort of a rite of passage, plus, the lazy dads could sip their beers and criticize. People get too wrapped up in this stuff. A couple of ounces over or under, Meh...

I've had the dealer do a half quart over, and I have done the same once or twice when filling from a 5 qt. jug. never had a car that took the full 5.

The next to last generation of Subaru Outback (2014-19?) takes 5.1 quarts at oil change. The filter is atop the engine. Considering the ground clearance on the Outback, it is the easiest oil change I have done -- well at least since I was a teen.

Our used Prius came from a Subaru dealership, and I noticed the placement of the oil filter on one of their display models -- very well designed. Any other cars with similar filter location? Yet you still have to get under the car to drain the oil unless you simply vacuum it out through the dipstick tube -- but how complete is the emptying that way?

My 2006 HHR and 2013 Sonic had a cartridge filter on the top. You might have had to push a coolant hose over a half inch.

I don't see the extra oil left behind by vacuuming being an issue. Then again, it was always the underneath filter that caused any mess for me.
