You can use Techstream if you like. I like disconnecting the 12V battery to give all ECUs a fresh start upon power up.

If P0A1D comes up again, find out the three digit info code associated with that and post.

If your car has completed the recall, the pump should not get shorted again (unless it wasn't done during the recall). The fact that it did short again should be reported. The recall was suppose to fix this issue so you don't break down unexpectedly and put yourself in danger.

There are occurrences where the pump fails but you are not stranded. But your situation left you stranded because everything shut down.

JC91006: Well that does make me wonder. Perhaps I was sold an old style pump at the time?

I don't think that there is any guarantee that the current pump design will not short.

I posted in July 2009 about replacing the inverter coolant pump as a preventive measure, prior to the recall being announced.
How to Replace the Inverter Coolant Pump | PriusChat

There were no obvious differences between the 2004 model year original equipment pump and the replacement pump with respect to markings on the pump bodies.

That post shows a photo of the part number associated with the new pump, which was G9020-47031. Looking at a Toyota dealer parts website today, I see that the current number is still G9020-47031 while the prior number had a suffix of 47030.

Hence it is not clear to me that there is any difference in inverter coolant pump design.

I checked my records and I replaced the pumps in both of my Prius (Prii ?) at the time with the new style pump G9020-47031.

Additional information: I replaced the failed '04 inverter coolant pump in Oct 2010 at 99.7K miles. Fast forward to May 2018 (~7.5 yrs later) and another failure of the coolant pump at 196.3K miles. So the life of these based on my two data points is about 98K miles.

98k miles is right on with the guesstimate we often recommend replacement. If you have 100k miles on the pump, change it out

I have my inverter pump on order and it should be here by the end of the week. My son is still driving the car with the inverter pump unplugged (very short distances < 2 miles back and forth to school) until I can get the new one installed.

Question/Observation: It seems to be a bad design idea to have the inverter pump on the same electrical circuit as the ECU. When the pump shorted and the fuse blew, it took the ECU out and the car was dead. If this had happened on an busy traffic situation, it could have been fatal. Thankfully it happened as my son was turning into a driveway in a residential neighborhood.

Did Toyota ever change the electrical circuit design and put the inverter pump on another circuit for Gen 2? Hopefully they would have addressed this with Gen 3.

This is why you have to report the problem to national highway safety administration

Pump arrived yesterday and I installed it today. The coolant around the pump smelled heavily of burnt electronics (you know the smell). I figured it was localized to around the pump at the time of failure and did not bother to flush and refill the system. Pump is humming and all is well (no error codes). Many thanks to everyone who chimed in and help diagnose the problem!

It is in the underhood fuse box - black box on the left (driver's side) of the engine compartment.

    That should be AM2. Screenshot_20220719-232120.jpeg
