Fortunately, B-I-L is VERY educable, plus, he's used to driving a stick, so telling him he HAS to press a pedal to start the car properly won't be a problem, and he can definitely recognize the word READY on command!
So what's the overall consensus? Stay-bil or not? Battery minder or not? My 2009 Prius is going to have to sit still in a garage for 4-5 months.
Regarding the 12V battery, either disconnect the negative terminal after the battery is fully-charged; or else hook up a battery tender. Regarding the fuel tank, I would just leave the car with a couple of gallons of gas in the tank, then fill the tank when you put the car back in service.
