Just got our first Prius: an '08 Model 6 w/ 24k miles. Toyota Certified Used. Question: Is there such a thing as a reasonably priced and reliable update for the nav data? I understand a factory update costs a bunch of money. Also, we got no manual for the nav system, so I don't even know how updates are accomplished. but the dealer said they'll order us the manual we need. So far we love the car! Suggestions appreciated! Thanks! ~willowgreen~
My recommendation would be to go to a 3rd party GPS when you need to upgrade. Most are under the $250 Toyota wants for one upgrade, and have lifetime upgrades from then on.
This has nothing to do w/fuel economy, so it should be moved. Also, thanks to Best Price Garmin nuvi 205 Portable GPS Navigation (3.5in) $64.99 Free Shipping Review Cheap Sale Wholesale 010-00717-40, I see a Garmin Nuvi 205 for $65 right now. It is very bare bones so it doesn't speak street names but the nav system in the 2nd gen Prius doesn't either. You have to go w/slightly higher end Garmins to get street names spoken aloud, like the 1200.
Thanks for the suggestion, JimboPalmer. I already own a Garmin nuvi 760, which is easier to use than the Toyota system. But I really like the screen size of the dash system and the audio quality. I likely will follow your advice, though.
