Sorry friend, I did not intend to seems harsh. When I went to a Prius meetup some years ago and *all of them but mine* were overfilled with oil, I can tell you I got pretty steamed.

As cars go, this is an easy one to 'do oil' on, and much of the other maintenance is often overstated in need and compexity. If I could get Prius people to relax about most of it an focus their attention on tires, CV boots, parking brake cable, throttle butterfly soot, and transmission fluid, I would certainly be less grouchy.

    Scott,

Thanks for posting the picture. From it... I conclude that red oil is less dense than brown oil.

All this talk about oil overfilling is making me thirsty. Here's my picture worth 1000 words

    :) THANKS ScottY...

...for posting that ICE cross-section showing oil levels. That's the VERY BEST illustration of why to NOT overfill the ICE oil.

Here's an update on my personal situation. I stopped by the auto parts store and picked up a filter wrench. Took off the filter and drained about a cup of oil from it. Ran the engine, checked the level, and PRESTO! I'm below the line. That's such an easy fix, even a newbie like me can do it. Didn't even jack up the car.

BTW I Love the picture, although I thought it was some sort of Transformer robot when I first looked at it!

I saw this posting just before I was about to draw an oil sample for testing. This is the second time I've taken an oil sample. Now I know I should insert the tube to the same length as the dipstick to get it to mid level in the oil pan. I was just guessing how far to push it in the first time I did it.

    Thanks.

If you check out the Service Bulletin is says 3.3 qts for the oil fill up . I mentioned this to the Service Writer and he nodded and said he would take care of it. When I got my bill there was no mention of the oil capacity but the tire pressure request was on there. So , next time I'm going to have him write it down on the work order just like he did with my tire pressure. This gives the dealership an out as the customer requested it. Just my .02 FishHawk

That's not right. The service bulletin says 3.9 qts, (3.7 liters, 3.3 imp. qts [British]). If it were 3.3, we wouldn't be having a problem! :)
