So I have a 2007 prius and after I fil up i only get about 7 gallons before pump shuts off I start losing pip bars after approx 21 miles and as low at 17 miles dealer stated my gauge is reading correctly the screen says 44.6 mpg average It used to say 51mpg i usually for about 315 miles before my gas gauge blinks in which i fill up any ideas? also does anyone have any experience on a gas treatment/cleaner that I can pour into the tank?
Yes. Do a good search of PriusChat. Seriously, the fuel gauge issue is one of those most frequently addressed on the forum. In short, nothing to be concerned about. It's a nuance of the Prius' flexible fuel bladder. You'll find plenty of discussion with a search. The drop in fuel mileage also is nothing to be concerned about. It happens in cold weather. Also a frequently asked question. I can't answer your question about a gas treatment; I don't use one. Just curious: What would be your goal in using one?
As Jim says above, don't worry too much about how much the gas tank holds and how much each pip represents. Doing so is a fools game. This board is full of posts from people driving themselves nuts trying to understand the gas tank and gauge. Unless there is a calibration problem, the gas gauge will do a good job telling you when you need to refill. Pay attention to that; otherwise don't sweat it. Tom
If you sometimes buy gas that contains up to 10% ethanol (look for a notice on the pump) you don't need any engine cleaner/gas treatment.
Meathead, Filling up with 7 gallons is typically the bladder in cold weather issue. Regarding your fuel gauge dropping so fast, it is likely the inclination sensor need calibration, which the dealer can do for you, if under warranty. If not under warranty, search the site here. There is a procedure that allows you to do it yourself.
