even when using compact, fuel-injected, manual transmission competition, the article still admits that the Prius has no peer for economy.

so let them use manual transmission cars for comparison.. after all... didnt seem to help em any did it?

How about the Jetta Wagon TDI? I was looking at one before I got the Prius. As far as the interior design, some things like the front seats and steering wheel position I liked better than the Prius. It was also around $3,800 cheaper than the Prius.

When I started asking owners what they thought of their Jetta TDI, I then uncovered some nagging reliability problems.

    Pass.

I treat VW in the same manner that I treat the US automakers. The least amount of "toys" you put in the VW, the less likely you are to have a problem car. When I was looking at the Jetta Wagon TDI, I was specing base model cars with no power add-ons whatsoever. Another co-worker has a similarly simply equipped Golf TDI, and it's been a fabulous vehicle, and this guy is none too easy on cars.
