Push powered lawn mowers, do they cut grass or tear grass?

Yes, as soon as I get the mower fixed, I need to get the deck welded.

Why? You don't seem to mind sharing the shower with me. You really can be unbearable and picky sometimes

To sharpen a reel mower spin the reel backwards, set just against the bar, which gets a bead of lapping compound along its length. This is available from an auto parts store. (aka valve grinding compound)

They slice when sharp, power mowers just beat. Been using same one for years. Many of my neighbors have them now too. So quite you can actually talk to each other.

Phantom farmers are those who till the soil, sow seed, fertilize and irrigate the crop, then periodically harvest the crop and discard all the biomass. We have a national obsession, even in arid climate as Phoenix AZ, with having a lawn. This is a holdover from being peasants in Europe on large estates. Time to get over lawns, recognize the extraordinary amount of time and water lawns take. With increasing moisture deficits we need to plant drought-tolerant, native, genetically prostrate vegetation - our front yard has been this for 21 years in the semiarid Great Central Valley of California. We prune once a year in the fall. The vegetation is climate-appropriate. We have not tried to recreate Indiana in California. Seems strange when the neighbor across the street over waters, over fertilizes, then mows his lawn once a week (and discards what he harvests). This ignores mower emissions, noise and maintenance.

Water? Fertilizer? Whats that? I have 5 acres of green stuff, Only have to keep the stuff around the house trimmed, otherwise it looks like an abandoned farm. I let the horses eat the rest. Of the last 8 years I lived there, I watered the grass once, and that was so the weed killer would stick. This is the first year I actually applied any weed & feed, because the heavy snows we had, and above average rain took a toll on the grass, and it looked very bad, a lot of bald areas where the grass died from being under water. The drawback is now I have to cut it more often, but I don't collect the clippings, they go back into the grass. Last 2 years I cut the grass about 3 times each year. The horses eat the other 4 acres of grass.

I never discard lawn clippings. I don't water my grass, I haven't cut my grass for so long my mower wouldn't start the other day, the fuel was off.
must replace lawns though, I get little joy from them now my dogs don't use them.

In a dry climate, I'd just have fine crushed rock. Add up the water, fertilizer, lawn mowing, and lawns are a huge waste of time and resources

Maybe with some fruits and vegetables on an automatic watering system? Or a big shade tree?

No, just fine crushed rock. Perhaps some 18x18 smooth cement patio blocks to walk into the back yard, though I have never used the back yard in any home I have owned

The only real use of a back yard to me is as a buffer zone from annoying neighbor children.

    Hmmmm

Perhaps a pond in the back yard. With very angry crocodiles
