Solution to 12V issues? Disconnect 12v negative terminal sensor plug

Nice chart.

I took a couple of 22mi/35min drives this afternoon, with a detour for groceries.
I had OBDC adapter voltage displayed via CarPlay and OBD Fusion.

It was steady on 14.3/14.4v the entire way. I did take my eye off the road a fair number of times, lol.
I managed to log the values as well-it backs up my assertion, lol.

Several OBD Fusion and Car Scanner (both display on CarPlay) notes:

-Graphing on both are lame
-OBD Fusion does log files in .csv format, whereas I could not see a way to export data in Car Scanner-perhaps the Pro version?

For those Gen5'ers who are into it, there's a profile in Car Scanner for '23 and up 'Primes', but I found a lot of stuff works on the LE as well. Do I understand it all? No. But others might. . I didn't systematically try everything-perhaps I should. Maybe connect to car and do an "all sensors" take some screen pics-see what fields are populated with data. Perhaps that would be most expeditious.

 

On my 2014 F150 the original battery lasted 3 years 10 months. At that point, after a bit of research, I disconnected the current sensor on the negative battery cable and it’s stayed unplugged since 2018. The replacement battery lasted 7 years and still had some life left. It is a well known issue on the F150 forums.

On my 2024 Prius I am keeping a close eye on the battery and charging rate and it’s been good so far. But, if I start finding it undercharged I will try unplugging the sensor.

 

Interesting that there seems to be a temp sensor in the battery current sensor.

I ordered a BM-2. Mostly for something to do...I hope, anyway.
I imagine charging voltage may be attenuated during the warmer seasons.

 

Yeah, it has temperature (a thermistor) along with voltage, current (a shunt resistor), SOC, SOF, SOH, and self-diagnosis sensors.

 

I have a voltmeter that plugs into the 12 volt aux adapter plus the BM2 on my 2024 Prius.

My experience (AGM battery) is when the battery temperature is in the mid 40’s F and below, the charge voltage stays a constant 14.4 volts which is what is did last winter and now currently. During warmer months, the charge voltage defaults typically to 12.8 volts after a short period of driving.

My truck has an AGM battery and during colder months the charge voltage is 14.4 volts per a plug-in voltmeter in the 12 volt aux port. The charge voltage decreases with temperature. Typically 13.5 volts on a hot summer day in the 90’s.

I replaced the OEM battery after it went flat and unable to start the car. I still have it and it tests good after charging with the Noco Genius 5. That said, the AGM has been in the car since October 2024 with no issues.
