Hey engine guru guys and gals, anyone know what this might be?

I just got done with a head gasket on my new to me 2012 Prius V, been driving it for about a week now and its going really well definitely no misfire or loss of coolant, the fix went really well. We got this car for a song broken down with completely unknown history so i don't know if it was doing this previous to the head gasket failing or not, its done 297,000km with very poor service history, oil filter was a real big mess twisted up and looking like it has been at capacity for a very long time, i would guess 30 or 40k on the filter easy .. nasty! I understand the overall health of this engine wont be great and it will be an oil burner but for the driving we do in the town we live it will still serve us a few years with oil top ups, servicing and general band-aids along the way! we only do about 25/30k km a year its not a busy life...

Anyway we done the head gasket cleaned the egr & inlet manifold new plugs and all the usual stuff, its going really well and runs great accept when i park it facing downhill and leave it for a couple hours then go back to it i get a bit of what sounds to me very much like lifter tick for a couple seconds..

BTW the engine was apart for about 9 months! and the lifters were sitting in an egg crate for about 9 months

Has anyone noticed this on the 2zr engine, is it lifters or something else?

    Cheers :)

They're auto-adjusting, on oil pressure. If it takes a couple seconds for pressure to build they might tick.

They have tiny check valves in them that might help slow down the oil draining out while you're parked. The repair manual shows a technique for testing those. Maybe a check valve got sticky in the egg crate?

Thanks ChapmanF that sounds exactly like what's going on, a perfectly reasonable explanation. I won't bother with the test now that it's back together and sealed up but if I ever have a 2ZR apart again, which no doubt I will.. I will definitely test them before fitting.

I would like to do some sort of aggressive perhaps even typically frowned upon oil flush, this engine had been abused worse than a .. oh better not say that!

Wonder how it would feel about a couple litres of diesel down the hole and let it idle for say fifteen min, maybe even pull the sump clean the pickup and reseal or is that going a bit far

    Thanks again ChapmanF
