Steering shaft question

    The reason the auto/boat/marine wiring practices join flexible wires with proper crimp joints rather than solder is to avoid the brittle joint resulting from solder.

    There are, of course, lots and lots of soldered joints in the car; they are just on circuit boards or in other places where things are fixed in place and flexing isn't an issue.

    Yes, you are correct, with the emphasis on PROPER crimp joints. I've had mixed success using crimp connectors, even after investing in a decent crimping tool.
    In my experience, a properly cleaned and fluxed solder joint between two wires is far more reliable, particularly in a flexing situation, than a dodgy crimp where wires can be pulled out or corrosion can easily start. If someone is not capable of soldering correctly, by all means try the crimp method but to be honest, two wires twisted together and back on themselves and well taped up may be their best option.
