The Roadster is the one car that got the other car companies moving toward BEVs and PHEVs. It is an exciting electric car. I'm not all that bullish on Tesla's future, it all depends on how they operate and how fast the other car companies move with electrification. Its not an easy task. If there is not a Tesla Roadster II, I'm sure we will see a BEV on a porsche boxter platform. Will it still be a boxter without an ICE? It won't be as fast as the tesla but should handle and perform great. So they all must be going down there. I just checked 54 LS hybrids this year through august, and no the earthquake didn't have much to do with the low sales. The Tesla S can sell well, but we won't know until it gets produced.
I would be difficult (but not impossible) for an aftermarket converter to electrify a Boxter to Tesla Roadster specs, but I don't see why Porsche could not produce an EV on a Boxter platform that would rival the Tesla for speed. To rival the range would be difficult in a car not designed with the space available for the battery pack. But speed and acceleration should be possible.
