I upgraded to Goodyear Comfortreds the same day we picked up the car from the dealer. We live on a hill... in Wisconsin, so I knew the OEM tires wouldn't cut it for us. A Goodyear dealer did the swap, including mounting, etc. for $200. Since this is my wife's daily driver it was $200 well spent. Of course I don't have mileage stats for the old tires, but she gets consistently in the low to mid-50's with these tires. She has become somewhat of a mileage junky and has had me put a couple of extra pounds in each tire and drives conservatively.
We just put Michelin MXV4s on ours and have already seen an increase in mileage, plus the cars a lot smoother and quieter now.
No kiddin eh?.. I even breaking even for better tires is a plus... can you zero in.. just 1 - 2 MPG improvement, or do you think even more? I think your the first person I've noticed said they had an "increase"
My MXV4's do as well or better than oem for mpg. Won't know for sure till next summer when I try to use up the old tires! All I can say for sure is the mpg is clearly better than it was, and with 13 k miles, it could be either due to more break in for driver or engine, or the tires. My top trip mpg ever was with the MXV4's by over 2 mpg more than what I ever got with the oem tires. My winter Michelin Xice tires seem good too for mpg.
Just to use them up. I don't want to throw out new tires. I will use them after the spring rains, since the rain is when I am most bothered by them.
I got my Prius in January of 04, so drove on the OEM tires for half a winter. Going into the following winter I followed John's lead and put on the Michelin Hydro-Edge. I've been very happy with them. Mostly, I just feel safer knowing I've got a top-quality tire.
