    galaxee, how many different sensor ids are there? If the number was low enough, say 64, it might be possible to set up a central pool of people to get duplicates for the winter/ summer wheels.

    Well, latest chapter in the TPMS mystery... let me recap;

    - Friday Nov 17: I mounted steel rims on the car without sensors. TPMS initialized successfully as normal.
    - Ran various errands throughout weekend, parking car in garage next to alloy rims in overnight. Light never came back on throughout Saturday/Sunday.
    - Monday Nov 20: Start car in the morning, no TPMS light. Drive approx 1 hour, put car in Park momentarily then back in Drive (not sure if this is a factor) and TPMS light flashes for 60 seconds then on solid indicating malfunction.
    - Flashing/staying on again Monday night and all Tuesday morning & evening.
    - Tuesday night, Nov 21: In Ig-on mode, tried holding TPMS reset button both away from home then again in the garage, neither attempt successful in resetting the light (worth a shot!).

    -> Wednesday morning, Nov 22: Start the car in the garage (next to the alloys w/sensors) and the TPMS initialized successfully (but did not the day before...?)!
    -> Wednesday morning, half hour later... TPMS light starts flashing and comes back on.

    So what's the deal with the intermittency? (sp?) Assuming the system communicated successfully with the tires sitting next to the car, shouldn't the error condition have fired within seconds (or at least minutes?) of not receiving any signal? Why was the car able to boot up B) a couple times this weekend (at various locations) and successfully initialize?

    This whole technology seems a little lacking. Toyota didn't make this system very user friendly for people who use different tires for different seasons. <_<

    I plan to very soon take a sharpie to a piece of that oil change reminder plastic film and craftfully cover up (or at least dim?) that light for the winter. B)

    exactly what we're wondering about...

    he has yet to look into the main/2nd hack possibility... will share info when we know more. it's going to be a while, though. lots going on.

    nate, the sensors have a 10 character id code on them that gets programmed into the ecu. the first three characters are the same in all sensors, but the last 7 are unique combinations of numbers and letters. i imagine the number of unique sensor id's is a very high one. :(

    Thanks... Just thought I would share my experience in hope that it may help everyone better understand how this TPMS system thinks.

    No hurry of course, it's just an idiot light after all. :lol:

    galaxee, thanks for the info. i never really trusted the system since its just goes to far low before it tells me anything. if it had a settable alarm, then ok, i run 42/40 so i want an alarm to go off at 36...without that, i will continue to check once a week like i have with my old 04
