So, interestingly, the first NAPA pump I got was one of the AISIN pumps with the scratched off part. (Toyota logo, maybe?) This second one is clearly not. I'm kind of glad for that, given the mixed reports of the AISIN pumps...that maybe a lot of them are seconds and of lower quality.

This pump *was* more awkward to get put on though. Some subtle differences in the shape of the housing meant the bolts were harder to get to because of clearance. Fit on fine, just hard to get to the bolt heads. Hopefully testing today.

Car runs! Going to drive it a bit before victory is declared, but I've definitely got progress. I've driven it on the interstate about twenty miles.

I'm getting a p0108, but reasonably sure I just need to check the hoses from the oil catch can install.

Car is doing well in first 100 miles. p0108 is still cropping up. Going to switch back to a pcv valve hose and take out the oil catch can to see if that is indeed the problem. That p0108 is intermittent, I suspect the vacuum not quite sealing right. Either something up with the can or the hoses.

I'm pretty sure that the problem I started this thread with is solved. Bottom line was crappy water pumps. 4th pump (original, replacement was bad, replacement for the replacement which I burned out by screwing up a hose, and final replacement) was the charm.

Head gasket job that i did additionally was needed and productive.

Now onto a p0401 code problem. I'd already cleaned the egr cooler and replaced the egr valve. I replaced the map sensor, so going to see if I can test for a bad egr valve now. Looking to see where I can get some replacement gaskets for the egr assemblies when I tear them back apart and put them together again.

Pulling the EGR apart, the gasket between the cooler and the valve was messed up. The black on it was peeling off and flaking. Same with the gasket between the valve and the pipe running to the intake. Getting ahold of those gaskets appears to be hard, but after dealing with those gaskets, and reassembling, the problem went away.

I've replaced those gaskets each time, (4 or 5?) and have gotten them from the dealer.
They've always had them in stock...
