Now we're going way back beyond Deacon's masterpiece! That was published in The Atlantic in 1858. Other than a few less-familiar words, it's pretty familiar modern English: Of course Holmes uses some goofy spellings for the way the Deacon sounds; Going back another handful of centuries, here's a little bit of Middle English:
