What is the purpose of N, neutral?

Yeah, done it. No problem whatsoever in almost 40,000 miles of driving and frequently shifting into N on hills. And I don't see how it could be a problem mechanically because if you just tap the shift lever to the left while driving the car shifts into N. This could easily happen accidentally, as N is the only "gear" you can get to without having to move the shift lever in two directions.

Don't know what you did, but my car shifts from D to N everytime I move the shift lever to N while driving. Can't say for sure that it is a good idea, but I've done it countless times with no apparent effects.
