I recently bought my mom a Gen 2 (from Steve at AutoBeYours, hi Steve!) and it's great, but has a way old nav disc in it. I could buy her the GEN5E-16 disc now, but isn't this about the right time of year for the -17 ones to be coming out? I e-mailed the parts manager at the dealership near mom, and he thought they wouldn't be available until Spring, but that doesn't seem like what I am used to seeing here. I know I could easily buy the cheap bootlegs of the -16 disc now. I assume those don't come out quite immediately when a new edition from Toyota comes out? If the real -17 disc is coming soon, I'd probably even pay list for it just to have it quickly. Does anybody have a good sense of what time of year these have been coming out historically, or a way to find out when they are expected for this year? -Chap
Thanks! And how does one find out when they have come out? Would there be any kind of announcement anywhere? Just keep searching for 86271-GEN5E-17 until something shows up? Is there a way to place an advance order? -Chap
None lol. Usually just go to the dealer and ask what the latest version is. It should be 16.1 currently and the new one you're looking for will be 17.1. Perhaps your local dealer might be able to inform you when the discs reaches their warehouse?
Well, it seems to have a Toyota FAQ entry that also says "typically updated annually in the fall". I'm still not getting any hits on the -17 number though. Nearly December.... -Chap
Welp, Metro Toyota is now showing the -17 discs for GEN06 and GENX5 (two different flavors of nav in 2010-11 Gen 3s), but they do not (yet?) show anything newer than -16 for GEN5E/GEN5W (2006-09 Gen 2s). GEN04 (2004-05 Gen 2s) stop at -15, and GN23E/GN23W (2001-03 Gen 1s) stop at -13. Those last two look like each disc series stopped ten years after the last model year of the cars using them. But that doesn't explain why there wouldn't be a -17 for GEN5E/GEN5W ... that last model year was 2009, so wouldn't it be nice if they'd continue that series up to -19? I wonder if they've really stopped that series, or the new release just hasn't happened yet. -Chap
