agreed, but it doesn't seem to phase many. when it goes back up to 4, there'll be a lot of whining for a while, and then it will go away again.
The last time gas was $.39 a gallon was 1974. The last time gas was $1 a gallon was 1990. When adjusted for inflation, both gallons were around $1.50 in today's dollars. The 1974 gallon was $1.43 and the 1990 gallon was $1.57 in 2011 dollars. Starting from 1929, gas prices bounced around between a high of $2.57 (1934) to a low of $1.40 (1998) in inflation-adjusted dollars and didn't begin to soar above that range until Bush, Cheney, and the early years of the Iraq War 2005+. I think that's actually remarkably stable. Vehicle Technologies Office: Fact #741: August 20, 2012<br />Historical Gasoline Prices, 1929-2011
OP, The only 'tricks' I can think of that might help you, an aggressive driver, are the engine heater and pumping up the tyres to sidewall maximum. Don't expect miracles though. 38 mpg might turn into 40.
