Congrats on the exceptional tank Evan! I've been following your progress on this thread and was glad to see you exceeded 70 MPG. I'm not going to bring up a long debate over the accuracy of the MFD...I realise how it calculates the mileage....but I'm still confused by its MPG calculation. I'm currently sitting at 59.7 on just 432 miles with 3 pips left. Then I look at Green Hokie screen shot of (60.4 / 571 miles) and wonder how can he be achieving 140 miles more for the tank with one less pip then I? Our average MPG is not that far off and I expect to be able to bring my number back over 60 MPG before having to fuel up...so why the large total mileage varience for the tank? It just seems odd to me.... :huh:

The problem is the variences in the tank..how much you fill, temperture, and the terrain you drive on is a big issue as well. For instance, with this last tank, I had the last pip start blinking while driving...CAN-View showed 12% tank volume. After parking and sitting level during my shift at work it was up to 15%, down to 12% again when I got home and back up to 15% again the next morning....it held that for about 50 miles when it finally dropped to 10% and I got gun shy and filled up.

I didn't think you could go that far on the last flasing pip, don't think I would try it either without something like CAN-view to guide me (or a spare gallon of gas in the 'trunk'). Generally I end up putting approx 9.5 gallons when fueling after the last pip starts flashing (that is with some 'top off' at the end). Temperatures been pretty consistant here for this tank (Around 70 during the day) but then again I don't have a block heater installed yet so my starts are 'cold'. I also travel over quite a bit of hilly terrain during my commute as well, so perhaps that plays a part. All things to think about, its a learning process to be sure..

congrats on your tank Evan!! i did rely on CANVIEW's gas gauge when i did my 650+ mile tank and waited until i was at 2% for nearly 10 miles (it did bounce to zero% a few times) but i felt comfortable with CANVIEW's reading. i also had tracked it from the "beep" and decided a rate of 6 miles per percent was a guideline for not running out of gas.
Evan, How long is your commute and how many times do you have to stop? I counted my stops today in my 12 mile trip to school and then back home. I stopped 21 times on the way to school and 22 times on the way home. I don't think I can approach 70 mpg stopping that many times. I'm pretty happy being able to keep my mpg at about 53.

I take a back route that requires b/w 8 and 15 stops depending upon how many lights I can time along the way. I have some pretty long stretches that help and I work off hours often so have the road much to myself at 2am or 5am coming home or going in respectively. I also have a 5 mile commute to drop off kids at school that has 5-6 stops that I can consistantly get 60-70mpg on with good conditions.

I need to know if its the traffic the lights the break-in period or my driving...well in perfect traffic conditions and without being in a rush I managed 64 mpg over 26 miles. I'm a long way from the masters at 72 MPG though...
